Varied texts that can be effective for storytelling include cumulative tales,
humorous tales, fables, fairy tales, creation tales, realistic stories, myths, sagas,
historical accounts, and riddles (Daniel, 2012; Stanley & Dillingham, 2009). These
are all types of stories that students and teachers can use to begin choosing topics
or when searching for a text to use for a specific concept, such as sequencing of a
story. Teachers should also opt for topics and texts to which students can relate by
selecting a variety of culturally responsive texts. Last, when picking topics and texts,
teachers should select those that are fun and colorful. Students love fun, colorful,
