Personal Reflection/Anecdote
In Transition
As 2021 neared an end, the scene
at Society Headquarters became quite
different from my early remembrances.
Storage closets were cleaned out;
furniture was inventoried; archival
materials were catalogued for placement
at the Dolph Briscoe Center for
American History at the University
of Texas. Decisions were made about
disposition of furnishings and works of
art. The Headquarters property at 416
West 12th Street in Austin had been
sold and would soon be vacated by the
May 16, 2019: Mary Sanchez is inducted as an International Society. Despite having mixed feelings
Honorary Member. about leaving this building, leaders and
members recognize that DKG is not
a building; it is the members and staff
who carry out the Society Purposes
and mission wherever they are.
Although the location of our
headquarters will be different in the
future, DKG—and Dr. Blanton—
will continue to have a presence
at the corner of West 12th and San
Antonio Streets. The new residence
tower to be built on the site will be
named the Annie B. In addition, the
development is projected to include
“commemorative garden space” and
incorporate pink marble echoing that
at the entrance to the current building.

tower that will be erected on the site. at the University of Texas marking
the founding of the Society at the
Faculty Women’s Club on Whitis Avenue, they will also be able to visit the Annie B and recall the
significance of this location in the ongoing story of The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International.
Evelyn Barron, a native of Mississippi, is a retired public school educator who has been a member of DKG since 1975. She
has served in many Society positions, including international president (1998–2000). Recipient of the 2005 International
Achievement Award, Evelyn is the author of Our Heritage Volume IV. She is a member of Epsilon Kappa Chapter of Texas
