Mandatory PD Activities
Systematic Approach to Teacher Effective Development (SATED) Tool
Developed by Dr. Susan Szabo, EdD
Directions: Many of these activities are already worked into your schedule by others, as they are an
expected part of your job. However, you only need to complete 7 out of the 9 options. For completing
these mandatory activities, I believe your district should give you 10 hours toward your PD hours. So,
check with your PD coordinator. Additionally, if you are in the apprentice teacher stage, you should
work on the first 7 activities, but if you are an in the expert or distinguished teacher stage you should
work on the last 7 activities.
Mandatory Activities
1. Attend a district “get-to-know-you” orientation meeting so you can get to know the staff in
the district office, administrators, and other new teachers.
2. Attend a district meeting so you can meet other grade-level or content teachers throughout
the district. If need be, these people will be resources you can ask for help when teaching a
topic is not going smoothly
3. Attend a district meeting to learn about new rules, policies, as well as state and district man-
dates. This will tell you expectations the district expects you to follow.
4. Attend a building orientation meeting to get to know other teachers. Be ready to share ideas
about yourself such as grade level you were hired to teach, degree you have, what you did
over the summer, etc.
5. Attend monthly faculty meeting to talk about upcoming events for the month. This meeting
should be held in different classrooms, so sign up to share your classroom for one of the
monthly meetings.
6. Attend at least one community-building activity for teachers and staff in your building (e.g.,
picnic, secret pals, scavenger hunt, games, cookie share, donut breakfast).
7. Attend and participate in grade-level or content-area curriculum meetings, sharing ideas and
talking about state standards being taught.
8. Serve on a school committee such as parent advisory committee, communications committee,
celebration committee (for teachers and students), back-to-school night committee, and so
on. Check with the principal to determine committee availability. Share committee work at
faculty meetings.
9. Serve on a district committee such as textbook committee or assessment committee. Share
committee work at faculty meetings.
10. Any ideas or input from the superintendent, principal, PD coordinator, or yourself. What
information do you still need to know or activities you want to help with?
