5. Strengthening social connections: Family policy can strengthen social
connections by providing opportunities for families to connect with one another and
with their communities. Policies that help build social networks can reduce isolation
and promote a sense of belonging.

2008; Montgomery, 1999, 2008) in the development of the four critical science-
focused instructional strategies. Therefore, prior to a description of the study,
