Reimagining ChatGPT in the Curriculum

                                             By Rosemary Morales Urbina

The author summarizes ChatGPT’s effective teaching and learning strategies — but also cautions educators about the
risks of plagarism, misinformation, and disinformation.

hatGPT has produced a ruckus, fear, and applause in the academia realm ever since it
Cdebuted on November 30, 2022. By January 2023, this Artificial Intelligence (AI) tool
had reached 100 million users due to its extraordinary ability to generate complex, real-time
narratives (Jarratt, 2023). It has also affected fields beyond academia.
The founder of ChatGPT, Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, defines ChatGPT as a member
of the Generated Pre-Trained Transformer (GPT) class of language models. It is a task-
specific GPT that was adjusted from teacher-directed approaches to target conversational
usage (Ordonez et al., 2023). Thus asserted, what is the real commotion about ChatGPT?
Combating the spread of misinformation and disinformation is a great concern
educators have about AI. Misinformation is false or inaccurate information, i.e., getting the
facts wrong. Disinformation, on the other hand, is false information that is deliberately
intended to mislead—intentionally misstating the facts (American Psychology
Association, 2023). Fake news, unproven newscasts, and groundless social media
posts abound in AI with posts that are easy to create and share. Recently, United
States President Biden was posted on social media wearing a hot pink business suit as
if supporting the ubiquitous film, Barbie. That is a mild example of disinformation.
According to some (Wayne, 2021), a more formidable disinformation led to the
January 6th insurrection in the Capitol of the United States.
Since 2023, numerous educators, researchers, and stakeholders have
circumnavigated ChatGPT. Now they understand its benefits and have embraced,
recommended, and incorporated it into the curriculum to their own and their students’
            advantage.

                               Enabling Multilingual Communication
D’Anterroches (2023) states that one of the most notable benefits of using ChatGPT
for multilingual interactions is its ability to provide on-the-spot translations, which
allows it to generate human-like responses in oral communication. This attribute
facilitates individuals in communicating with others who speak different languages
without the need for human translators or traditional translation mechanisms, thus
making it an influential tool for overcoming language barriers and promoting global
collaboration—which can be especially useful in professional environments where
coherent communication is crucial for successful collaboration and decision-making.
Pokotilo (2023) and Karakas (2023) believe that being able to communicate
effectively amid all language barriers is most important, especially in this highly
globalized world. With the arrival of AI, ChatGPT-4, and Natural Language
Processing (NLP) technologies, a subfield of AI, communication and interaction
with others are being revolutionized, surpassing linguistic and cultural boundaries
and making a powerful tool for breaking down language deterrents and contributing
            to global collaboration.
In addition, ChatGPT-4—the latest and most advanced version of OpenAI’s
GPT language model—has been trained on more data, and its advanced language
