Personal Reflection/Anecdote
Nancy: Had the book been already published by then?
Elena: It was in the process of being published, so I talked about it and handed out flyers. The book is
done, but the research goes on. There are still things about Gaspard that I hope to find out.
Nancy: As I read, I began to wonder, do you personally own a small sketch or painting by the
artist?
Elena: It’s ironic that you ask about it. Most of his work is rather expensive, but I tried to buy his self-
portrait this fall. It was a small but very elaborate pencil drawing that was estimated at $800 to $1,000 at
an auction in North Carolina. I filled out a bidding form (I could not attend in person), but, unfortunately,
someone overbid me by $100. What a disappointment! There are many works by Gaspard at auctions,
especially in western states; however, it is a rare case when they are within my price range.
Nancy: Elena, I find the book fascinating, a real life adventure of discovery that brought me to a
new understanding of the man, his art, and your commitment to uncovering the truth. I’m already
expecting to learn more about Leon Gaspard as you continue to uncover additional facts. Thank
you for your devotion to this research project and for sharing your insights and perspectives with
DKG members.
