UPDATE: JAPAN
ugust 1, 2021, was a big day for Japan State Organization. What we dreamed for a long time came true:
Athe birth of a new chapter. Since we were inducted in 2012 as the very first state organization in Asia,
we have walked forward as a state organization with only one chapter. Past presidents wanted to create new
chapters and were looking for ways to do so. Because we are celebrating our 10th anniversary in October 2022,
we wanted to make our dream a reality.
We recruited people and explained to them what DKG is all about. Most of them, to our happy surprise,
responded positively and agreed with DKG’s philosophy. Some who are fluent speakers of English took a look at
the DKG homepage and learned how wonderful the organization is.
We named the new chapter “Beta.” Beta Chapter has 18 members so far, and 3 collegiate members are
among them. The Beta Chapter installation ceremony was held via Zoom at 3:00 p.m. Japan time on August 1,
2021. On that day, not only our original members in Japan but also many guests from abroad were kind enough
to join the ceremony. International President Becky Sadowski, Membership Director Trish Woodley, Southwest
Regional Director Janis Barr, and some colleagues from other parts of the United States were there to celebrate
the newcomers in spite of the big time differences between the two countries. We are so grateful to them for
their generosity.
Something that should not be overlooked in talking of DKG Japan State Organization is the existence of the
Hawaii State Organization. They conceived us, gave us birth, and raised us. Whenever we get lost and ask for
help, they are ready to extend their hand to us. Japan State Organization owes so much to them, and we wouldn’t
be here without them. Many Hawaiian members joined the ceremony as well to witness our growing.
Members of the new chapter have started their activities, and they are now working on a 4-month “Make
Friends Project,” which aims at leadership development of the members as well as getting to know each other.
Now that we have two chapters in Japan, it would be wonderful if both chapters learn from each other and
develop through friendly competition.
Hatsue Kitahara, Japan State Organization President (2021–2023)
