community we serve or the nation in general. It does not help society for folks
to complain about education and then not put their money where their mouth
is. We need funding, and communities need to be involved in donating their
time and talents or just making efforts to know what is going on. No matter
if you have a child in school or not, it is important to know your district and
what teachers need to help the children of today. It is not about pointing
fingers but about jumping in and giving a hand.
KR: What do you say to those who have family responsibilities and have
little time for other educational activities?
LCL: You can find time if you make the time. If you binge-watch television
or play on social media, those are hours you do not even realize were spent.
Educational things inspire you to make a switch to do something you feel
passionate about. You can make a difference. Analyze your day. It is not easy,
but it is doable. Also, I will say that it helps to take advantage of the moments
you feel energized and inspired. If you get a lot done during that time, then
you can relax guilt-free when you need it.
KR: Anything you would like to let new members or potential members
of DKG know?
LCL: DKG is a lot of fun, and women I have met have given me hope and
made me feel like I can get through anything. If I need something, whether
it be a one-time ask or the path to a larger goal, they will get me there.
It is worth the effort, and I get it back tenfold. I think potential members
should also know that if you invest in DKG, we invest in you. I have been so
fortunate to have been granted several scholarships at the state organization
and international levels to help me pay for my doctoral program. The cost
was becoming a burden on my family, so it was a great relief and honor.
