Personal Reflection/Anecdote
was a member of a team, and the decisions made were not solely mine, so it was a
good introduction to leadership. From there, I became the chair of the membership
committee. It was a bit more responsibility and a gradual increase in my leadership
role. I am currently the vice president of our chapter, Delta Chi. I was honored
to be asked to fill the role of vice president by several women leaders who serve
in multiple leadership roles within DKG, and I was humbled that they saw such
leadership potential within me.
For the last 2 years, I have been a member of
the North Carolina State Organization Leadership
Committee and work with wonderful women
from all over the state, which gives me immense
satisfaction. Last year, we planned the 2021
Leadership Conference, which was successful
even though it had to be attended virtually due to
COVID-19. Last month, I became the committee
chair and will grow yet again in my leadership
within DKG. My participation in DKG has
come full circle. I began this journey as a new
inductee, participating in the DKG Leadership
Development Conference, listening and observing
but not being an active participant . . . and grew to
being the chair of the Leadership Committee and

Gallery I have realized that being well organized and prepared when I have to speak
contributes to my success and banishes the fog from my brain. I have transitioned
from the classroom to a position of leadership within my school district. I am at
Central Services using my newly acquired leadership skills to strengthen our ESL
department and to help develop leadership traits within those teachers with whom
I work. I now lead monthly staff meetings with the other ESL teachers in my
department and have not had problems with the anxiety that formerly coexisted
with speaking in front of a group.
I encourage all who feel they do not have much to contribute to overcome
reluctance and become more involved. Opportunities abound for all personalities,
whether one prefers to be a team player or work alone. The main objective is to be
involved. Whether one is the main speaker or working behind the scenes, each has
a part to play. By becoming involved, one becomes an integral part of DKG.
