Leadership Development
• Provide opportunities for small-task
responsibility for a single event or
project; doing so may offer openings
for service without a long-term
commitment.
• Look for projects about which
members are passionate and empower
them to help guide those projects.
• Supply meaningful and relevant
activities that serve the needs and
interests of the members.
• Solve problems together. Be flexible
and willing to change direction. Lead by
example.
• Let members use their strengths; not everyone has the same skill set.
• Say “thank you” and show that you genuinely care.
• Build trust and value the work of others. Celebrate successes.
• Actively listen and build relationships with the members of the team.
• Have fun. Don’t take yourself so seriously: No one expects you to be perfect.
Ultimately, the key advice is to know your strengths and work from
those, seeking the help of others in areas where you may feel you have
less competence. Great leaders are continually “growing other leaders”
who are essential to ensuring the future of our Society. As you lead by
example, don’t hesitate to seek help and input from others on the team.
You are not expected to be able to do everything. Remember, the success
of each member is a success for the group, so set the bar high!
Embrace change, diversity, and inclusion of new ideas, people, and
methods. Allow team members to take the lead on projects of interest. The
president doesn’t always need to be in the lead. DKG is an organization driven
by member participation and involvement. Remember the shared vision and
empower the team to implement it. Serving your chapter, state organization,
or the international organization is both rewarding and enriching and will
enhance your opportunities for both personal and professional growth.
