Classroom Practice/Program

The Wheel of Emotions begins with identification of common, easier words expressing feelings
in the center, with more specific emotional vocabulary moving toward the outer rings. My 2023
research on SEL in high school (Palige, 2023) found that students struggle with the vocabulary
to identify their emotions. Building students’ emotional language helps them become more self-
aware and develop emotional efficacy. Teaching students to build their emotional vocabulary
was really the crux for this club. Using the Wheel of Emotions alerts teachers to what feelings
students are experiencing, leading them to know students at a deeper level.
