                                              Discussion
Overall, students and faculty from the medical school that was the site of the
study believed the instructors in face-to-face and online course settings should
have realistic expectations of students and be fair in testing and grading. The ideal
instructors should be experts in the subject as well. Having a positive attitude and
being pleasant with students was another cited vital characteristic of ideal instructors.
These students and faculty also considered respectful behaviors important. Last,
ideal instructors should always strive to be better instructors. Specifically, ideal
online instructors need to be technologically competent. This finding echoes the
previous conclusion (Borel, 2013) that online instructors should offer sufficient
            technical support for students.
Students and faculty who participated in this study held different expectations of
instructors’ behaviors. For face-to-face course settings, faculty considered it more
important for the instructors to establish daily and academic-term goals, listen to
students while they were talking, be the expert in the subject they teach, and be
prepared for the course. The instructors should also be professional and present
current information. Mirroring the previous conclusion that the instructors should
motivate students in higher-order thinking (Kentnor, 2015), faculty in this study
believed promoting classroom discussion and critical thinking to be significant.
However, students highlighted that the instructors should be confident. Several
behaviors by instructors teaching online were considered more important by faculty,
including setting daily and academic-term goals, listening to students, and preparing
for teaching. Faculty also expected the ideal instructors to be professional, promote
classroom discussion and critical thinking, and be passionate about teaching and the
topic. Finally, the ideal instructors should manage online class time well.
