In November 2023, I presented an educational program to Chi Chapter as a
follow-up to the Presidential Visionary Award that I had received earlier in the year.
Each Chi member received a calm strip as well as a truncated version of the lesson
that I taught students. I was encouraged by their curiosity and affirmation of the
importance of this project. One member shared that she was going to put her strip
in her car because traffic stressed her out. Some placed the calm strip on their phone
case, while others saved the calm strip to give to someone who needed it more than
they did.
The Outcome
Fast-forward to April 2024—I was curious if the buzz had died down. Had the
novelty of the calm strips faded, or were they still being used? What was the impact?
I designed a follow-up lesson to review and teach more self-regulation strategies,
and part of the lesson was surveying the students once again. Although I did not get
a chance to get into every classroom, I administered an online survey and was able
to poll 389 students, more than half of the school population, to get a sense of the
impact of the calm strip implementation. Responses were as follows:
― 85% reported they used the calm strip regularly or occasionally.
