Centennial Celebration
100 Years! 100 Different Ways
Remember the celebrations in elementary school for the 100th day of school? What did you prepare to
share with the class? Tee-shirts covered with 100 buttons or 100 bows? 100 smiley faces on a poster
board? 100 pieces of peppermint candy or Tootsie Rolls to share? 100 Cheerios strung onto a shoestring
for a necklace? Oh, the choices were unlimited!
Celebrating the 100th Anniversary of DKG’s Chartering
Delta Kappa Gamma Society International came into being on May 29, 1929. Our initial purpose—
to enhance education and advance women in the profession—has never changed through the years. Now
we are getting ready to celebrate the 100th year, and each chapter is encouraged to plan a way to share
the excitement prior to the Celebratory Conference to be held during July 2029 in Austin, Texas, the
birthplace of the Society. Plans are already being developed to have members come together that year
for one big event. The Centennial Celebration Committee is working to make this a most enjoyable,
exciting, and educational conference and welcomes your ideas and suggestions. Email suggestions to
CelebrateDKG@protonmail.com.
Celebrating DKG’s 100th Birthday: Unlimited Ideas
The Celebration Committee has begun creating videos of the
decades! Each will share what was happening in the world during that
particular decade of DKG’s existence. The brief video of the 1930s is
available for viewing on the international website: Events > Centennial
Celebration > YouTube link. Future decade videos will be released
yearly leading up to the celebration in 2029.
These videos will provide excellent introductions for chapter
programs. Let the committee know how you use them. They can be used
as an inspirational moment or perhaps be the introduction to a monthly
program, with members dressing in clothing of that decade and reflecting on
events that occurred during that 10-year period.
Other international committees are developing plans for what they will do to celebrate the milestone.
Be watching to see what each develops as their 100th idea!
What would be a great way for your chapter to celebrate 100 years of DKG? Donate 100 books to a
children’s facility? Spend 100 volunteer hours helping at a school? Write 100 letters of encouragement
to beginning teachers? Make 100 lap quilts for a nursing home? Tutor children for 100 hours? Pack 100
personal care kits for homeless shelters? Contribute $100 to Schools for Africa or to one of the nine
DKGIEF funds? Compile a list of 100 random acts of kindness? The possibilities are limitless! Share
your chapter’s plans with the celebration committee at CelebrateDKG@protonmail.com
100 Years!
In 1949, Dr. Clara Parker stated about her friend, Dr. Annie Webb Blanton: “This organization, Delta
Kappa Gamma, conceived by its Founder as an instrument of service to education, has fulfilled her
dreams in the years which followed.” So much has changed in the years since 1929! Yet, dedication to
improving education and the status of women in the profession remains.
Help develop the plans to celebrate 100 years of being “forward moving ever” and growing with
DKG. DKG is our organization. This will be our celebration. Start making plans now to be in attendance
in 2029.
