DKG Practice/Program
2. Are you a member who observes and understands nonverbal communication?
You do not infer movement by others personally and comprehend it as a need to protect
themselves from proximity or as part of their culture. You observe where individuals sit in a
room and imagine a reasonable explanation for those sitting at a distance. You do not jump to
negative conclusions. You understand and see the actions of others as a personal choice.
3. Are you a member who remains positive and always uses words that encourage?
You attempt positive and encouraging way to communicate (Figure). You
think of alternative ways to make your point. You encourage others to be positive
as well. You realize true leaders do not engage in power struggles.

We need new blood. You are a superstar for DKG.
You’re getting too old. I really like your energy and all you bring to the
table every time we meet.
We don’t do it that way. You have a good point. Can you share more
information about that?
We really don’t have time to discuss that. Let’s place your idea on our next agenda.
We will get back to you another time. Let’s take some time to combine what you added to
what we have discussed before.
You look tired. How are you feeling today?
Your ideas are different from what we Let’s all work to ensure that we have diversity in
usually do. our chapter.
You have missed too many meetings. How can I help you with all you have going on?
We cannot do that because it is not in the Let’s review our rules to see whether that twist

Comparing Insensitive Comments to Encouraging Comments
4. Are you a member who accepts the opinions of others?
You respect and remain courteous and sensitive to the differing viewpoints of
others. You do not discuss differing views with others in a negative tone. You move
beyond differences and focus on what you have in common. You spend a few minutes in
conversation with those with whom you are less familiar to get to know them better.
5. Are you a member who invites others to participate in decisions and join in events?
You invite others to participate whether online or in person. You encourage
diversity and include all members. You accept visible and/or invisible limitations.
You assist members with whatever limitations they have.
One example of encouraging participation is to consider a program such VITA (Volunteers
in Technical Assistance), developed by Illinois State Organization to pair a member who is
tech savvy with a member who needs assistance. Volunteer members are asked to be a contact
person for others in their area who have limitations with technology. The volunteers are willing
to visit those members in their homes with technology instruction and even computer set up.
6. Are you a member who makes friends easily and never knows a stranger?
You begin a conversation about ideas at events. You assist members on a committee but
do not overstep your role. You help guide all members in their leadership journey.
