By 2021 DKGNext Members
At the 2022 International Convention, members of the DKGNext 2021 team gave
brief messages on opportunities, contributions, impact, possibilities, our vision, and
connections and collaboration in DKG. Each message contains thoughts that help
one reflect on her own DKG experiences and determine if she is making the most
of her DKG journey.
Opportunities in DKG: Shannon Cato, California State Organization
Have you ever just blindly followed a friend’s recommendation that you join
a club and thought, “Well, if they like it, I will too?” That is exactly what I did
when two of my colleagues recommended that I join DKG. Little did I know
then that blindly following their lead would open doors for me, introduce me to
amazing women, and make me a better leader. The first chapter that I joined with
my colleagues provided opportunities to really be part of something special. I was
appointed treasurer with this chapter,
and it really allowed me to brush up
on my previous bookkeeping and
accounting skills. Being treasurer also
allowed me to be a fundamental part of
the annual fundraising project, where
I was able to really get to know my
fellow sisters. We had several hundred
people attend, and I was able to meet
new people and network for our group.
That led to being involved in other
DKG events, including being a speaker
at the California State Organization
convention, discussing the unique
educational program where I work.
Shannon Cato seizes After a few years, those same colleagues and some of my new sisters
an opportunity
to share her encouraged me to be part of chartering a brand new chapter of DKG. Mind you,
thoughts at the we chartered this group during the pandemic. This experience led me to take on
2022 International greater responsibilities, to reach out to many new and potential sisters, and to meet
Convention. the members of the DKG California expansion committee. It also created special
and very strong friendships with the “Modesto Six,” as Daphne Cagle called the
six of us who created and chartered Kappa Epsilon along with 35 brand-new-to-
