DKG Publications: So What?
Since November 1934, DKG has published The Delta Kappa Gamma Bulletin, first as an informational
newsletter filled with DKG news and messages from state organizations and chapters and, beginning in
November 1945, as a journal with member contributors. So what? In 2015, DKG reformatted two issues
of the DKG Bulletin as a magazine entitled the Collegial Exchange. Again, so what? What is the impact
or importance to members of the DKG publications?
One obvious benefit of DKG membership is reader access to these two versions of the DKG Bulletin.
Both publications are available to members electronically on the dkg.org website, with print copies of
the Collegial Exchange also physically mailed to members. Perhaps a less obvious membership benefit,
however, is the potential to be a published author because each version of the Bulletin (journal and
magazine) offers different opportunities for publication.
What do these DKG publications mean for members who
• have had great success with one or more aspects of teaching (i.e., managing a classroom or teaching
fractions)?
• have had success with a chapter or state organization activity or project?
• have read a great professional book or developed a teaching technique
worth sharing?
All of these would be great topics for the DKG magazine publication, the The Delta Kappa Gamma Bulletin
Collegial Exchange. Geared toward practicing educators, this magazine International Journal for
format is a perfect vehicle for members to share —or exchange— Professional Educators
classroom and school-level programs and techniques as well as chapter 2022 Volume 89-1
and state organization information.
On the other hand, what do DKG publications mean for members who
• have an action research project to share or a piece of educational
technology to review?
• are working on an advanced degree and wish (or need) to share a Changing Perspectives on
literature review or their research findings? Teaching and Learning
• feel strongly about a current hot topic in education and wish to present
one side of the debate with supporting data and authoritative sources?
These categories would be better suited to DKG’s research-based
journal publication, the DKG Bulletin: International Journal for Professional Educators. This Bulletin
format offers members in higher education a vehicle for publication, helps doctoral candidates meet
program publication requirements, and helps members still active in the profession to enhance their
resumé list of publications. What if members only view DKG publications from a reader’s
perspective and never submit articles to the journal or magazine formats of the Bulletin? What if they do
not share their research or teaching techniques or chapter ideas as DKG authors? Members provide the
content for both the magazine and the journal versions of the Bulletin, making every member a potential
DKG author who can play a vital role in presenting the face of the Society to readers within as well as
beyond our membership. Perhaps the questions regarding DKG publications are not only “So what?” but
also “So who?” and “So when?”
