Special Request for Input on a DKG
Research Project:
Where Have All the Teachers Gone?
What Can DKG Do About It?
There is a shortage of teachers – not in every school system or in every grade or subject area but
in enough of these that educators should be concerned. For a host of reasons, teachers are leaving the
profession. High school and college students are choosing other careers that seem to pay better and possibly
generate less stress. Affluent school systems and postsecondary institutions are battling with their poorer
neighbors to recruit the best teachers, counselors, and administrators.
In preparation for an article to be published in the Bulletin, the DKG Editorial Board seeks members’
help in assessing the teacher shortage across the Society and considering what is being done (and could be
done) by state organizations and chapters to support, mentor, and recruit teachers. The goal is to collect
and share programs and ideas that can be replicated or adapted by other state organizations, chapters, and
communities.
Data collection will occur through a survey disseminated to state organization and chapter presidents, but
individual-member responses are also welcome. To access the survey, go to www.dkg.org > Publications/
Documents > Bulletin Journal > DKG Editorial Board Research Survey. Deadline for completing the
survey is June 1, 2023. Forward any questions to Dr. Dorrie Powell at powell.dorrie@gmail.com.
