their members electronically, the proposal also replaces the provision for geographic
distance with a provision for a member’s inability to participate virtually with the chapter.
A second proposal seeks to allow chapters to grant reserve status to members for any
reason whatsoever. The Administrative Board believes this change could open the door
to chapters having significantly more reserve members than active ones. Fiscal impact is
unknown.
Honorary Membership
“An honorary member shall be a woman not eligible for active membership who
has rendered notable service to education or to women and is elected to honorary
membership in recognition of such service.” This PA broadens the qualifications for
International Honorary Membership to those who have made great contributions
to education or to women who might have been eligible for active membership at
one time but have gone into other professional fields. An honorary member may
neither be nor have ever been a DKG member at the time of her election.
Emerita Status
One PA creates a new membership status, “Emerita”—designed to recognize
DKG members who have given long-term service. The proposed qualifications for this
new status include “having been an active Society member for at least ten years and
holding positions of leadership in the Society, although exceptions to this may be made
by the chapter.” Emerita members would be recognized as active members without a
vote and would not be required to pay dues. Of the Society’s current 55,120 members,
37,735 meet the criterion of at least 10 years of membership. Because the chapter would
retain the right to make exceptions, elimination of dues for these 37,735 members
moving to emerita status could reduce dues revenue by $1.28 million annually.
Publications
Along with its newsletter, DKG NEWS, the Society publishes the dual-format
DKG Bulletin, which includes three online issues of the International Journal
for Professional Educators (“the journal”) and two print and online issues of the
Collegial Exchange (“the magazine”). At this time, the magazine, which debuted
in 2016, is the only publication designated to be mailed directly to every member
(although a member can opt, within her MyDKG profile, to receive it online-
only). Based on member feedback about the publication to Society leaders, in
2018 the Editorial Board proposed that the frequency of the magazine be increased
to three times per year—a proposal now to be considered at the 2022 convention.
Costs for printing and mailing an additional issue are projected at $119,000.
